"How You
Doin? - The Art of History Taking"
Time Frame:
60-75 minutes
Target Audience: All.
Getting
an accurate history from a patient is very important to the eventual
care of the patient. Vital information could be lost
simply by not asking the right questions. This session
looks at the way we ask questions and offers alternative
methods. This is a fun-filled "talk show" audience
participation format that gets the listeners involved!
What's Up With This?
Time Frame: 60-75 minutes - General
Session
Target Audience: All.
Ever wonder
why we do the things we do in EMS? Have you ever heard
someone say, "That
is the way I was taught," or "That's the way
we have always done it?" These are the little things
that we learned to do somewhere from someone, but we
really can't recall why. Things such as how you tape
someone down on a backboard to oxygen delivery to "cocktails" and
much, much more. In this hilarious and interactive session,
Bob takes the audience on a tour of the "sacred
cows" of EMS in an effort to prove them valuable
or bury them forever.

Medicine" Gone in 60 seconds: the First
Minute of Life

The call is for a
newborn baby, in cardiac arrest! Sounds scary doesn't
it! That is how all newborns arrive in this world, in
cardiac arrest. Our actions in the first 60 seconds of
life can make a huge difference for the depressed newborn
and prevent the well from becoming depressed. In this
exciting, interactive session, participants will slow
down the clock and learn second by second how to manage
this nerve racking situation.

Whole Lot of Shaking Going
On - Understanding Seizures
Time Frame: 60-90 minutes
Audience: All
Ask most
people and their definition of a seizure involves the "Grand Mal" seizure
with the person violently shaking all over. Is that all
there is? Is this the only type of seizure? Does it make
any difference in the pre-hospital setting what I saw?
What is the correct classification of seizures?
This course will show, via videotape,
the various types of seizures, discuss their etiology
and proper classification, and describe the various management
issues for today's EMS personnel. Exciting AV support
and real life case studies makes this a don't miss session!
The
Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Issues in Spinal Care
Time Frame: 60-90 minutes
Audience: All
This
session takes a closer look at our spinal immobilization
practices and focuses on why we do it and what our goals
really are. The presentation features many examples of
frequently missed items when immobilizing the trauma patient.
Many researchers and physicians are suggesting that we
should not immobilize everyone with trauma. This talk also
focuses on that issue and offers a critical look at alternative
algorithms (including BTLS) or ways to "clinically clear" C-spines.
EMS
from Death's Perspective Time Frame: 60-90 minutes.
General Session
Audience: All
Imagine
having the grim reaper address a group of EMS personnel!
That is exactly what occurs during this wildly successful
session. "Death" addresses
EMS personnel in a frank and blunt manner. Bob dresses
in a grim reaper costume and includes audio and visual
stimuli complete with "graveyard tested" music
and gruesome photos to get the point across. There is
also a healthy dose of humor involved. The theme of the
talk focuses on common errors and misconceptions about
patient care and education that only Death himself can
bring to light. This talk is like none the audience has
ever seen or heard before.
As one seminar
wrote in their brochure, "Don't miss this one 'Parental
Discretion Advised!" This session is for all providers and
works great as a general session to open or close a conference.
Stethoscopy
for Dummies
Time Frame: 60-75 minutes
Audience: All
How
much did you pay for your stethoscope? How much training
did you get on how to use it? In this session, participants
are provided down to earth "for dummies" information on various
types of stethoscopes and how to use them to get the
most out of patient assessment. New and improved methods
and techniques are presented and lung and heart sounds
are also played aloud so all participants can hear the
sounds rather than hear a "description" of
the sound. This session includes audience participation
where lucky audience members could compete for a new
stethoscope.
Closed
Head Injuries: The Pressure is On!
Time Frame: 60-75 minutes
Audience: All
Head injury management is rapidly
changing on all fronts. This talk is designed to update
the EMS provider on the latest controversies in the acute
management of closed head injury. Ideas such as hyperventilation,

and more. This session is much, much more than the standard
head injury lecture. New stuff is presented for all levels!
Asthma
Attack!

Asthma affects millions of people
nationwide. There are thousands of asthma related deaths
each year. This is common respiratory emergency that
nearly all EMS providers have seen. However, this session

other than the standard bronchodilator therapy. This
session also emphasizes the importance of assessment
including lung sounds and other assessment techniques.
